Following Tom Baker's eventual departure, Peter Davison was selected to take over, as he was seen as a fitting contrast to Baker's infallible, confident Doctor. Davison was well received for his work in All Creatures Great and Small and despite being the youngest actor to play the role at the time, was taken on board and received positively. Peter Davison decided to leave the role after 3 years, prompted by advice from Second Doctor, Patrick Troughton.
