An Eighth Doctor Micro Essay.
The Eighth Doctor
Portrayed by: Paul McGann
Tenure: 1996
It's more or less impossible to do eight things for Paul due to the fact he only had an hours screen time, all the same he's stuck around, instead finding fame in books and radio and CD's and the like. All the same this Doctor had a few wee quirks about him too. For starters he seems to have inherited his sweet tooth from Doctors four and seven, often offering up jelly babies to various bewildered Americans.
Another striking thing about this Doctor is that costume. As Russel T. Davies puts it, it's as if the Doctor is summarising himself at the end of the century. It's a beautiful ensemble with emerald green and gold in there, making for a very striking Edwardian look. Something his successor would be all to keen too tone down to the bare basics.
Eight is also unusual in that, as of the present he still is the only Doctor not to get a regeneration. Indeed Eccleston crashed onto our screens in 2005 freshly changed, and it seems unlikely that we'll ever get to see how it happened, which is a shame.
One thing about this Doctor that makes him stand apart from the crowd is the revelation he's half human. Throwing away everything the series has previously stood for. Fans were and still are in outcry at just what the hell does that mean? Did Fox think he was too alien? Grr, annoying.
