Three New Third Doctor Things

The Third Doctor
Played by Jon Pertwee
Tenture: 1970-1974

The Third Doctor, as well as being another new face, brought many changes to the franchise as it approached it's 7th birthday.

1. Colour
It may seem a horrifying thought to us now but back in the seventies colour was a new concept for the domestic environment on a mass scale, prior to this colour telly had been reserved for the well off and not many programmes broadcast in colour anyway. To introduce this new era Doctor Who got a new psychedelic opening sequence and the Doctor got the most different costumes out of any Doc to date. Add to that the yellow car and the disco coloured anti-matter monsters.

2. Daleks
By quite odd contrast the Daleks actually got less colourful with each appearance. In their first Third Doc outing they retained their sixties silver job, but now had black bumps instead of blue, and a Gold painted counterpart. In later appearances they'd go from silver to warship grey. Oh, and this is the start of the Dalek 'pupil'.

3. A new theme tune
Tinkering had taken place previously with the theme tune, removing bits, editing it around and lowering the pitch of bits, but it stayed fairly much the same since '63 (and indeed would continue on so until '81). All the same in '73 a new theme tune was tried out and thankfully didn't catch on.
